Silhouette Die Cut Card with Blended Background

Sometimes, simple cards make the biggest impact, and one of the styles I particularly enjoy making is a silhouette die cut card with blended background. The beauty of this design is that you can use any silhouette die with plain card because the blended ink background provides the focus.

For this card I chose to use a semi-circular die that cuts out a forest and deer scene. I also have to be honest and say I don’t know exactly where I got this die from, I’ve just had it in my stash forever. There are no stamps available to pair with this die set, so the trees and stags don’t have any detail – they are just silhouette cut outs. If you’re any good at artwork you might be able to add the detail yourself. Sadly, I’m not, so I stick to using them as they are.

This semi-circle die creates a negative space, and whatever you place behind that space will show through. It means you can get super creative and build up whole scenes if you like. You could try a watercolour galaxy background for a striking night scene, or use foam tape to create dimension and stencil hills and woodland on the negative space.

In this example, I have kept things simple and completed the card using Tim Holtz Distress Oxide Inks to blend a simple sky background with various blues. You can use this same technique to create sunset skies or starry nights as well.

Putting this card together is easy. Just blend your chosen inks directly onto your card base right behind where the die cut will be positioned. Adhere the die cut panel onto the card base and add a sentiment. I chose to finish my card with some adhesive enamel embellishments.
